A small book packed with a ton of profound truths, I invite you to savor it slowly, rather than reading it straight through.  Nouwen's thoughts helped me through a very rough time when it seemed like everything was coming against me.  It was hard to believe that I was God's beloved.

Though finding grace was, for me, a multi-year process, stretching into my 50s, I credit this book with really breaking through and helping me understand the truth of grace, and the freedom from guilt, shame, condemnation and manipulation.  The title is a little misleading, in that, while it talks about how these truths can be used in families, the book is applicable to individuals as well.

Unmending the Veil  A wonderful read, but this will also inspire you to a deeper relationship with God, which is what I most want to do.  When Jesus died for us, the veil in the temple which symbolically separated us from God was ripped in two, showing that we have complete access to Him.  However, sometimes, through our pain or fear, we mend that veil up, creating a barrier between ourselves and God.  Lisa Heaton demonstrates in her story how to unmend that veil, stitch by stitch, to once again enjoy intimacy with God.  One of my favorite books.

In 2003, when I first read this book, I was stuck in a really horrible situation and had been for years.  I got a hold of this book and read it six times in 6 months, making so many notes in the margins and between pages that some of the pages were nearly impossible to read.  Recently, I was suggesting it to a friend and realized that you can see the influence this book had on me through my novels.  I would love to see people read this hand in hand with my Isaiah Cadre series.

I first read Celebration of Discipline my freshman year of college.  I read it every year for a number of years after that, and I still go back to it quite a bit.  This book shaped my spiritual life enormously and I've used it many times in discipling and mentoring others.

This is not about being disciplined or disciplining.  This is about spiritual disciplines:  Prayer, Meditation, Fasting, etc.  A classic I highly recommend!

Inductive Study Bible (Precept Ministries)

This is the Bible I use for my personal study -- except that mine is older, so it doesn't have this gorgeous cover.  This is a super way to study the Bible.  You are led to discover for yourself what the Bible says, as you are taught some excellent Bible study techniques.  It has lots of extra resources included ... and one of my favorite things: super wide margins for writing in.  (I use NASB; this particular one is ESV, but you can also get NASB with a more traditional cover.  ESV is a very good translation, as well.)

Joy In Suffering by Mil Yi

Note from Alyce-Kay:  This book is very helpful for anyone who has suffered or is suffering.  It also contains some information specifically for abused spouses, which is the best I've seen by an evangelical author.  Rev Yi walks the reader through the book of James, explaining how each portion relates to suffering in the life of the believer, including steps of action recommended by James.

Wounded by God's People by Anne Graham Lotz

For those of us who have been hurt by the Church or by Christians, this daughter of Billy Graham, who has experienced the same sort of grief and herself stayed away from Church for a while, offers substantive advice as well as understanding.  This is a wonderful book to help you know that you're not alone ... and to work through what you've experienced.  Please don't stay where you are in your woundedness -- keep moving forward.

Healing the Trauma of Domestic Violence

This book is superb, not only for those who have suffered through physical abuse, but verbal or emotional abuse, bullying, or gaslighting as well.  This is NOT a workbook to work through on your own.  Please get the help of a therapist or other trained counselor.  I highly recommend this program.
